Episode 544: Perfect Alibi

In “Perfect Alibi,” slick private investigator Johnny Seltzer thinks he’s found the ultimate score when he falls in with Alice Collins, the beautiful niece of a wealthy lumber magnate. Together they hatch a cold-blooded plan: murder her uncle, frame gambling boss Frankie Benson using planted evidence, and walk away with both the inheritance and a flawless alibi placing Johnny safely at Alice’s apartment. The scheme works perfectly—too perfectly. Benson is arrested, the papers declare the case solved, and Johnny congratulates himself on his brilliance. But when police arrive at Johnny’s door, it’s not about the uncle’s murder at all. While Johnny was busy perfecting one crime, Alice herself was brutally killed in her apartment, stabbed with a letter opener in a scene eerily similar to a past Benson victim. Johnny’s airtight alibi for one murder becomes proof he couldn’t have prevented the other, and the man who believed he’d engineered the perfect crime learns that a perfect alibi only works for the right victim.
